`Ike Pono: Music

Ka Ho`olauna

Words & Music: Michael Lowe / Hawaiian Translations: Karen L.L. Victor

MICHAEL: "I remember my Kumu, the late Raymond Kane, sharing with me the origins of Ki Ho'alu (slack key guitar). In the 1800's, Spanish Vaquieros (Cowboys) were brought to the Hawaiian Kingdom to teach the Hawaiians how to herd cattle. In their spare time, the Vaqueros brought out their guitars which the Paniolo (Hawaiian Cowboys) were intrigued by. Upon leaving the islands, they left their guitars for their new friends. Not knowing how to tune these instruments, the Paniolo created their own tunings, hence the birth of slack-key."
